Allow me to reintroduce myself.
My name is Ben. I run the YouTube tech channel Ben’s Gadget Reviews and I write a monthly tech column for Forbes Asia magazine. I also write tech-related features and reviews for several other online outlets such as the South China Morning Post.
I decided to start Next Gadget Up as a companion to my YouTube channel, so I can provide multimedia coverage of this exciting industry.
Yes, I know, there are like 8,000 other tech sites out there. So why read Next Gadget Up?
- I don’t just report from afar; but also on the ground. I attend trade shows such as Mobile World Congress and IFA; Apple’s product launches; and I visit the headquarters of tech companies regularly. I’ve interviewed senior execs from Huawei, LG, Xiaomi, etc; visited factory production lines; and I’m always keeping an eye out on upcoming tech.
- I’m able to report on the ground because I’m based in Hong Kong, an hour away from where most of the tech hardware action happen these days. If you are familiar with my YouTube channel, you may know I have a reputation for getting my hands on Chinese handsets ranging from Vivo to Oppo, Honor to Meizu — days or weeks before other media. It’s not because I’m better; it’s because I’m physically closer.
- I hate clickbait as much as you do. Are you tired of tech sites writing about phones they haven’t touched, basing a 400-word article entirely on a press release and second-hand accounts? Are you sick of tech sites using ambiguous headlines to entice clicks? You won’t find that shit here. All my headlines will clearly and accurately explain the type of content. With the exception of major/reliable product leaks, I will not write about a product until I’ve at least seen it in person.
If you’ve made it this far down. Thank you. I can be reached at bencsin AT gmail DOT com.
Oh, the name of this site is inspired by the “next man up” mentality that’s a big part of basketball culture. It means you gotta be ready to step up at any given time. And that’s what I expect out of gadgets — you best be ready to go at any time, in a real world setting.
Special shout out to Bae, for keeping me grounded and helping me shoot B-roll footage; @nayahh_art, for the illustration above; and to Rachel Seguin, who built this website.
